Winnebago County Illinois operates a metropolitan area network (Win MAN) supported by copper, fiber and wireless network technologies. Urban Communications, Inc. (Urbancom) involvement in the licensed and unlicensed wireless segments of the Win MAN has been and is critical. One particular challenge required Urbancom to design a redundant gigabit licensed wireless solution connecting two campuses of Winnebago County Government spanning just over a five mile distance. One of the campuses is where a 911 Center and nursing home are located – two critical county government services. The thoughtfulness and precision used to architect this solution demonstrated great acumen in the wireless microwave business segment. Myself and the Winnebago County Department of Information Technology are pleased with pre and post market support from Urbancom, have done a number of wireless projects with them and will do more. What I am really keen about is that Ed Urban will call me directly and check in on the projects he and his staff have completed.

Your company excelled in a number of areas. During the request for proposal process, the proposal that you submitted followed the specifications that we outlined in our RFP, which helped us understand the products you were proposing, the services you were offering, and the costs associated with these services. After winning our business, and as the project progressed, you adhered to the specifications outlined in the RFP, including the equipment your staff installed, the documentation you provided, and the functionality that the installation provided. I was especially impressed with your proactive efforts to stay on top of the parts of the project that could have easily caused delays, such as working with us to configure the wireless devices to work with our particular firewall equipment. Of course, the true test of the whole project is whether our wireless link works. From the day the equipment was hooked up, we have enjoyed the increased bandwidth that it provides, and there have been no outages to date. Again, thank you for your excellent service, which has made this the smoothest large-scale project I have been involved with managing; and thank you for providing a reasonably priced, robust solution to our bandwidth needs. We were awarded a contract for a renovation project at Marathon Schools in Marathon NY which included a new wireless bridge system between the two schools. I called Urban Communications and received a quote for the new equipment and all set up, programming, and testing of the new system. As we prepared to move forward with the installation, we encountered some design questions. I immediately contacted Mr. Urban and discussed our problems with him. He also talked to the engineer and the schools representative. Mr. Urban was able to correct all the problems by designing an upgraded system to provide 800 Mbps/800 Mbps speeds that matched the actual needs of the school and allowed for future expansion. When we needed the equipment, one phone call was placed, all the programming and software was installed, and we received the equipment in a timely fashion. Our electricians completed all the initial work; another phone call was placed to schedule the service technician from Urban Communications to visit the job site in upstate New York for final terminations and alignments of the equipment. We completed all tie ins to the schools servers and the entire system was brought to life over the internet with final adjustments completed over the phone with the engineer at their home office. The total experience with Urban Communications was above and beyond my expectations of dealing with a company located so far from us. Their service and knowledge of the equipment was superior. The equipment is state of the art and comes with warranties and service plans that make working with Urban Communications much more than a contract, it becomes a relationship.

Since 2001 when we partnered with Urban Communications to provide our internet services, our experiences have been nothing short of exceptional. We are a leading manufacturer in our industry with locations in the US, UK, Brazil, and Singapore. Our company, GenDesign Corporation, has been using Urban Communications for some time now. These services have included wireless WAN connections at various sites for our own customer, as well as Network Operations Center (NOC) services in Oak Forest. As for the wireless service, it was quickly installed at our customer sites and has been professionally supported. During the few times where we experienced service affecting issues, we saw quick resolutions and were happy with our results. We have used these connections for voice and data; they have been workable and “saved us” more than once when wired services from larger vendors failed. The NOC provides a mirror site for a large, multi-million dollar end user of ours for whom up-time is important. Heretofore, the Urbancom NOC has been physically secure, up, and available, providing VPN and Internet connectivity. Urban Communications has provided our wireless internet service since August 2002. In my opinion the connectivity far exceeds any DSL or Broadband service available.
